Chapter 1: THE RESEARCH PROCESS AND RESEARCH TOOLBOX

Abstract:

The purpose of RESEARCH TOOLBOX is to enhance the efficiency of research. Chapter 1 provides a brief description of the research process and how this leads to the philosophy behind the RESEARCH TOOLBOX suite of integrated tools. It also shows how both new and experienced researchers, as well as consultants, can benefit from using these tools.

1. Why was RESEARCH TOOLBOX developed?

How fast can you think? Did you know that nerve signals travel at only 220 miles per hour?1 However, even with this relatively slow speed, amazing feats are still possible. For example, how does a batsman hit a ball travelling at almost 100 miles per hour?

This is an involved process. The ball and the playing field must be observed, memories of previous experiences drawn upon, the correct strategy chosen and the final action taken. All of these happen in milliseconds!

Success is only achieved if all the relevant elements of the body are optimised and perfectly integrated. All things being equal, the most success in research can also be achieved if the elements of the research process are optimised and integrated. This is the purpose of RESEARCH TOOLBOX.

A first-time researcher however, will need "coaching" to accomplish good results. To realise the full potential of RESEARCH TOOLBOX, some aspects of the research process must first be understood.

An elementary research mentor is therefore also included in RESEARCH TOOLBOX. The step-by-step approach, on-line Help, pre-installed example proposals and other components will help to "jump start" new researchers in their research. This should assist the supervisor in the "coaching" process.
